Week 5

Your Baby's Development at 5 Weeks

By five weeks, the primary organs' foundations are in place, and your baby's nervous system is beginning to grow. The embryo's length is about 2 mm. As the heart grows into a tube, blood circulation starts. The umbilical cord is a bundle of blood vessels that runs between you and your child. The outer layer of the embryo folds to form the neural tube, a hollow tube that eventually develops into the brain and spinal cord. As soon as you learn you are pregnant, you should begin taking folic acid as it helps prevent some problems.

For you after five weeks:

- Women usually start thinking about getting pregnant around this time when they miss their first period.

- Prenatal care from doctors and midwives is essential to guaranteeing the health of both you and your unborn child.

- Make quick contact with your GP or selected maternity provider to begin receiving care when it's needed.

- Pregnancy care should begin early, particularly if you have a medical condition such as asthma, diabetes, epilepsy, heart disease, or lung problems.

- Before quitting any recommended medication during pregnancy, speak with your physician or midwife.
